On Friday afternoon (Feb. 23), after coming home from the noontime concert we heard kid voices out in the hallway of our apartment building. The kids were really excited and ran to the door to see who it was. They've been missing their friends so hearing kid voices was a welcome and exciting thing.
We went out to meet who was out there. Next door to us were some families from India, one with a boy a year younger than Glenn and a little girl around Sarah's age. Wow! Perfect!
So we introduced ourselves and got talking with them. The little girls wanted to show their stuffed animals and dolls and the boys wanted to run around the halls. It was great to have someone for the kids to play with and for me to have someone to talk with.
We found out that the boy's birthday was on Sunday but they were having a party to celebrate on Saturday. They invited us to come. So we went!
Boo.
Just when we find kids that live here, we find out they are moving! But it isn't far so we'll have the chance to get together again.
When the food did arrive, so had many other guests and the apartment was quite full. We had planned to stay maybe an hour because we had an outing planned that afternoon. But we were there for 2.5+ hours. We only had a chance to eat some cake and some appetizers before we left. They really wanted to share Indian food with us, even though we said we had tasted homemade Indian food before. I love that Indians love their food and love to share it with others.
Because of that, our neighbors in the building invited us to have dinner with them later the next week. So on Wednesday, February 28 we went next door to have an Indian dinner.
While we were talking at first, they had some cookies and chips to share. Sarah got a cookie and then showed it to me because it had a funny face on it. (Remember Glenn's pizza slice with the face on the bottom? Well, Sarah has been looking for faces in food since then.)
Can you see the face in this cookie?
Then we had dinner. Preeti made a potato with gravy dish and fried rice with some poori bread. The dish with the potatoes had some spice to it--they didn't think it was, but for us it was spicy. But we all really liked the rice dish (which I forgot to take a picture of) and the bread.
We asked them a lot of questions about India and they asked us questions about Canada, the US and our customs and traditions. It is fascinating learning about other people and how they live and what life is like for them. This was their first time out of India and they loved the experience. They were happy to meet some people who aren't Indian (they really only have met other Indians who also came over from his company). We then had fun talking pictures together.

We had an enjoyable evening with them, staying and talking until about 11:00pm! During our conversations, we talked about spicy foods vs. sweet. They said they didn't really like sweet things. But we said we knew a dessert that wasn't too sweet--Rice Krispy Treats.
So Friday, March 2nd we made some and then took them over to share with her. She tasted a small piece and liked it. So we gave her a few pieces to share with her husband and for their airplane ride. They too are moving, but back to India, on Sunday. :(
So we shared some treats and a little sticker tattoo. She had noticed the one on Glenn and Sarah, so Glenn asked if she wanted to have one too. She said yes. So then we took a picture of our sticker tattoos together. Preeti said she wanted to always remember it.
We were grateful to meet this new friends, even if it was only for a short time. We love people and love getting to know them. Our lives are better because of the wonderful, amazing, kind, generous and friendly people we meet no matter where we go in the world.
