Day Four in South Carolina: Patriot's Point

Our last day of sight-seeing in South Carolina was on August 15th.  That day we went out just as our little family.  We went out to Patriot's Point to tour the 3 boats there: the USS Laffey, the USS Yorktown, and the USS Clamagore.

We had kind of a crazy morning--forgetting things, taking wrong turns and thinking we would miss our assigned tour time out to Fort Sumter--but in the end it all worked out.
At first we thought walking around the USS Laffey was big.  Then we walked over to the USS Yorktown and realized how small the Laffey was in comparison.  The Yorktown was huge!!

Inside the Yorktown they had planes and things on display.  They even had a little space module.  We crawled inside and they had a video of us blasting into space.  It was fun!  Glenn loved it!  He loves space and has asked me numerous times when he would get to be up in space.  Perhaps one day, kiddo!
We got to climb in one of the planes.  It was a tight squeeze!  I wouldn't have done well as a pilot.  I don't like small, tight spaces...and I can get sick while flying.
Our final tour was in the submarine.
We had fun climbing through the small doors and seeing their tight living and working conditions.  Those men who served our country were amazing--not only for their bravery in fighting and defending our country and our freedoms, but also for putting up with such interesting living conditions!
Some more views of that cool bridge.

From that same area in the bay we got on a boat to go out to Fort Sumter.

On the boat ride over, we saw some dolphins!
Then we arrived at the island where Fort Sumter is.  We had a short presentation at the beginning and learned some history there as well as on the ride over.  The forest ranger mentioned that some of the cannon balls were still in the walls.  That was interesting to see, as well as the construction of the fort itself.

Inside was a small museum.  We got to learn more about what happened there.
It was a history-filled day for us.  It is neat to be in these places that have such significance to our nation.
After our time down at Patriot's Point, we headed north to the Columbia area.  Arik and Natasha were having a family BBQ before their wedding the next day.  We got some hotel rooms with Holley's family and had a fun time at the BBQ and at the hotel.  (We also had a crazy time finding the hotel and getting settled in.  Glenn got kind of hurt, the people below us complained to the front desk, who then called us to tell us...and that night when I started my journal entry, I realized that it was Paul and my wedding anniversary.  Hmm, maybe not our best one so far.)  :D
